I don’t know the exact dates but Saigon fell on 30 April. If I remember correctly, we were in Subic when that happened and got underway right then and there.

I didn’t have any trouble getting my medal. It was a few years ago and I believe I had to send in a copy of my 214 and something telling them I was giving up my AF Expeditionary Medal to received the VSM.

Sorry I can’t be of more help but my memory just isn’t what it used to be. Good luck to you Raul.

    Hi Paul,

I’m going to talk to Bob then to the Navy. I don’t see why we can’t get it to go to Evansville first. Once I talk to the Navy here, I’m going to talk to our local news organizations to try to get a little good press for us. Hopefully Corpus Christi will understands what this means to us.

    Thanks for everything…Gregg

    Take care…

Hey Steven… was that near collision during the 75 Westpac? I don’t know if it’s the same one that I remember. We had lines and hoses across and were pumping. One of the ships lost steering and we did an emergency breakaway. I was the ship to ship phone talker on rig 12 (?) the last rig on the starboard side. That’s when I learned NEVER to fasten the strap. I was pulled to the rail as the ships moved further apart and was leaning over the rail a little when I finally flipped the phones away. Of course while I was doing that the span wire came flying back. It sure made for an interesting day!

I got my Vietnam service ribbon after “trading in” my Expedition medal. The government ran out of the medal so they gave me the names of a few companies where I could buy it. Very nice of them.

I didn’t have any trouble getting it done though. I’ll try to remember to pull the papers together so I can see how long the process took. If I remember correctly I was issued a DD215 to show the new medal.

Thanks for the pics Paul. I have a few of the same boat that I need to get scanned I guess. I was taking a picture of the boat as they were pulling away when a guy on the boat waved and threw something at me. It hit me in the chest and dropped to the deck. I picked it up and it was a nut with some Vietnamese money wrapped around it. I picked it up and gave him a thumbs up which he returned. I have a picture of him and his thumbs up. His way of saying thanks I assume. I still have that bill…
